L & B - Coach No.
2

When the Lynton and Barnstaple railway closed in 1935 the whole railway was
auctioned off by the owner the Southern railway. This coach, originally No.2 was
Lot No.16 in the auction and was purchased by a local man and transported to the
Rectory at Challacombe. It stayed here for many year until eventually being acquired
by the National Railway Museum and transported to York. It was here that I
photographed it in the Great Hall during a visit in 1994.
Given the number of years it has spent in the open the coach is in remarkable
condition although I'm sure it would require many hours of TLC and a lot of
money should it ever be agreed to restore it to working condition.
