L & B Woody Bay - Summer 2007

Closed by the southern Railway in 1935 long before the birth of the preservation movement, the Lynton and Barnstable Railway has occupied near legendary status with railway enthusiasts throughout the world. Perhaps because one of it's locos was exported to Brazil after closure - never to be seen or heard of again, or perhaps because a member of staff places a wreath on the buffer stops the day after closure bearing the inscription '.... perchance it is not dead but sleepeth'.

Whatever the reason, most people in the preservation movement have dreamt of its re-opening. After many years of hard work and plenty of set-backs, the Lynton and Barnstable preservation society have worked tirelessly to establish a base at Woody Bay from which they will hopefully rebuild the entire 19 mile length of the railway.

During our summer holiday, we managed a quick visit to the Lynton and Barnstable Railway at Woody Bay. Although it was late afternoon and everything had closed for the day, you feel the atmosphere and admire the incredible quality of the work done to date.

I hope you agree with me that the society has done a magnificent job and I will certainly continue to support them in their quest to rebuild the line.

To all those who say it couldn't / can't be done, I say visit Woody Bay and see the progress for yourself, then join the society and help us restore this historic and wonderful railway!

I've also included some picture of the historic Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway too.
