LBSC 3
1/2" Gauge Maisie -
Tender
The following pages detail the
progress on the tender.
Finally, in June 2002, after a break of 7 years work on Maisie's
tender re-starts. Below is the progress made during the summer of 2002.
The model engineer who I knew when I
started this project advised me to complete the tender before doing any
significant work on the loco.
The reasoning was two fold. 1) For novice
model engineers (such as myself) the tender is simpler to construct and more
tolerant to mistakes. 2) Many people loose interest in a loco once it's
operational and start work on their next project. This sometimes leads to a
tenderless loco running round club tracks.

Photo's of the tender frames taking shape. Notice the horn blocks have been riveted
on and machined. This necessitated splitting the frames, riveting the block on
before riveting the frames back together to allow machining.
The cast springs are fastened to the frames using counter sunk screws fixed from
the inside.
The method of fixing the frames to the buffer beams is clearly visible.
Slots are cut into the beams and the frames driven in. Holes are then drilled
and tapped before BA bolts are finally screwed in.

A photo clearly showing the method of constructing the tender tank. Brass
angle is riveted to the tender body. Soft solder is then run into the joints to
make water tight.
Note all the spring castings are now fixed to the frames.

The above three photo's show the tender tank nearing completion with the
emergency hand pump in place with the access 'filler' flap constructed.

January 2005 - The
tender now has a rolling chassis although there is still the centre wheel set to
do.

A
close up view of one of the wheel sets. The left most picture was taken prior to
the real coil spring being fitted within a brass sleeve.

Pictures showing the buffers part complete and fitted to the buffer beam.

Another couple of views of the rear buffer beam with the two complete buffers
fitted.

Finally March 2005 sees a view of the completed tender. The beading, hand rails,
coal rails and pluming are the only outstanding tasks.
