Boxhill - Cab,
Bunker & Toolbox
In order to shortcut the build
process and ensure the highest possible quality, the decision was made to
purchase laser cut cab, bunker and well tank parts.

I came across a company called Model Engineer Laser run by Malcolm High at a
model engineering exhibition, see www.modelengineerlaser.co.uk.
Malcolm offers a complete service where, if he hasn't got the components available,
he will use computer aided design software to copy your drawings into a computer in order to produce the laser cut
components. His prices are also very reasonable too. The pictures show the
components as delivered.

The cab of Boxhill is designed in two basic parts. The rear toolbox and the
bottom of the coal space in the bunker form a 3rd water tank. The second part is
the actual cab itself.
Photos below are of the well tank and dummy tool box construction which combine to increase the
water capacity of the model.

Construction of the cab came next and was reasonably straightforward.
All the construction was carried out by soft soldering with either angle and
/ or
rivets to strengthen construction. In an attempt to stop the cab sides
distorting, I strengthened the them using square brass rod on the inside which
will also assist in locating the cab roof.

The complete cab and toolbox assembly loosely assembled on the loco. There is
still some fettling needed and beading round the cab sides to add.

With the cab largely complete and much of the pipe work finished, the engine was
displayed at my club's annual 2007 'May Day' gala.
