Boxhill - Painting The long process of painting now begins. Automotive spray primer was use and very straightforward to apply.
Given my experience with Butch, I decided to use Phoenix precision paints. Having visited Boxhill in the National Railway Museum, it was clear to me that the very complex London Brighton and South Coast Railway livery was far beyond my capabilities to hand paint. I therefore brought the excellent lining and lettering transfer sheets from Phoenix.
The repaint of the chassis and wheels was reasonably easy. Note the balance weights painting, intended to highlight the spokes.
All painting except the primer and smokebox was done using very expensive artist brushes. The boiler cladding was the most difficult and took four attempts before I go the paint consistency right so the brush lines were virtually invisible when dry. The water slide transfers go on very nicely, one tip (which is in the instructions) apply to gloss paint NOT satin.
So here we have it, two 3/4 views of the finished job which I have to admit, I was very please with! Note also the rear toolbox lid, I glued some planking bought for decking a model boat to the rear tool box lid which I think made it look more realistic. |
